UUW 119 Korean Language 1

Course Synopsis

Korean Language ClassEUW119 is a new course in a series of Korean language courses and is designed for students who have NO previous knowledge in spoken or written Korean. This course introduces elementary Korean pronunciation, grammar, characters, as well as commutation skills.

The topics of the course are interesting to learners since it includes various ethnic cultural backgrounds. Information is presented that can serve as a basis for cross-cultural comparison and that both students and the teacher will find stimulating and enjoyable. Many elements in the syllabus (grammar, functions, topics, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary) provide solid support for oral communication. It reflects current understanding of the nature of listening comprehension in second foreign language learning. Speaking skills are a central focus of the course.

The main feature of Korean is phonetics and phonology. Learners can pronounce directly through words’ spelling. So that it is very difficult to correct the learner’s pronunciation when the wrong pronunciation is already fixed due to the lack of proper pronunciation education during the beginning learning stages. The learner’s mother tongue influences his or her pronunciation of the Korean language. Therefore, it is not easy for most learners to acquire the correct pronunciation in a short period of time. The education of pronunciation should be a continuous process from the beginning level to the advanced level. This course will cover only 4 lessons of <Exploring Korean Workbook (Beginner’s Book)>, and whole of <Korean Pronunciation for Foreigners>in the first semester. Students will learn greetings, numbers, directions, how to introduce oneself and one’s family, how to tell dates and time, how to talk about one’s hobbies, how to talk about their favorite stars and dramas. and students also will take several months to learn korean pronunciation rules.
